The focal point in a room is a design element or architectural feature that your furniture and accessories are placed around. If neither of these is available in the room an element such as a picture, a mirror or a piece of furniture can be used. When decorating a room you should know how to find a focal point. The focal point should be an element in the room that is visually appealing.

Biggest Feature

Upon entering the room to decorate you should first look around for the biggest feature. This can include a fireplace, a built-in piece of furniture or a picture window. You can use these features as a focal point in the room.

Furniture Pieces

If the room is lacking a big feature you can use a piece of furniture that will be placed in the room. This can be a day bed or other large piece of furniture. You will then need to determine where your furniture will be placed in the room. The piece of furniture for the focal point will need to stand our form the rest of the furniture that is placed in the room.

Other Elements

When the room is bare of any visual elements you will need to create a focal point. This needs to be the first thing that an individual will see upon entering the room. Make a focal point by hanging artwork on the wall or by installing a shelving unit. You can then place a flower arrangement or some other item on the shelf.

Using Paint

Determine which wall in the room to use for the focal point. You can then paint a contrasting color onto the wall that stand out. You can also paint a design or stencil onto the wall. The wall can have a shelf or a piece of art added for visual stimulation.

Winter is all about gathering firewood and checking your HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS for a carbon monoxide detector – but why stick to the mundane? It’s a great time to spruce up your house when you don’t want to, say, add on a deck – here are a few of our favorite wintertime dcor ideas:
Paint Something: Painting is a great way to kill the time you’re cooped up indoors, so grab a roller and choose a color. Just remember that it will get dark earlier so choose your light accordingly and the wet winter air may make drying longer.
Rearrange the Furniture: One great thing about this time of year is that it’s not painfully hot – what a great season to break a sweat. Try out a new room arrangement for a few weeks before it gets so hot you can’t think!
Add a Project: Other home improvement projects that can easily be completed over a weekend spent indoors are a tile backsplash in the kitchen, wainscoting in the bathroom and even crown molding in a small room, if you know what you’re doing. Why waste all this precious “house” time!?

There are numerous ways in which you can add the illusion of height to a room. It is often a good idea to incorporate several of these suggestions into one room to gain the maximum decorative benefit.

Stripes

Vertical stripes will add visual height to a room. Choosing wallpaper with vertical stripes is one option. You could actually paint vertical stripes on each wall of the room or on just one accent wall. Choosing striped fabric for your floor to ceiling window treatments will also add visual height to the room.

Wall art

Mirrors are a great way to add visual spaciousness to a room. One long, narrow mirror would lead the eyes upward. Or, you could hang several small mirrors in uniquely interesting frames in a vertical arrangement on one wall. A long, slender tapestry would also provide the illusion of height in a room.

Accessories

Placing a tall floral arrangement on an accent table will add the illusion of height. Floor lamps and sconces are also ideal accessories that tend to make your eyes travel upward. Consider the addition of an attractive tall plant, real or artificial, as a way to draw visitor’s eyes upward in the room.

Choosing the right interior decorator is harder than you would think. Not only do you want the room to be perfect but you don’t want someone who is going to break your bank. When searching for your decorator there are a couple of things you have to keep in mind and one thing you absolutely must do.
First of all. Check out their portfolios. If you don’t like what you see there you won’t like what they’ll do to your rooms. If they go on and on about these fabulous rooms that seem to you like they belong in a circus tent then they’re not listening to you.
The perfect decorator is one who will listen to you. They ask pertinent questions like how you envision the room being used and what your family-s needs are. The take your answers and incorporate them into their design and if they’ve truly listened to you then you will love what they’ve come up with.
A great decorator will take into account your wants, needs and taste, mix them together, tweak them a bit and voila! A perfect room.
Take your time when choosing your interior decorator and the results will amaze you.
